Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a significant source of information on health, nutrition, and dietary choices. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube feature a wide range of content, including recipes, fitness tips, and nutrition advice, which influence individuals' food preferences and behaviors (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). In Nigeria, where malnutrition and diet-related illnesses remain prevalent, social media holds the potential to raise awareness and promote healthier eating habits, especially among youth and young adults. Bade Local Government Area in Yobe State, characterized by a blend of rural and semi-urban communities, presents a unique context for examining the impact of social media on nutrition awareness and dietary choices. This study investigates how social media platforms influence dietary behaviors and promote awareness about nutritional practices in Bade, emphasizing their effectiveness in shaping healthy lifestyles.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of social media to positively influence dietary choices and nutrition awareness, its impact in rural and semi-urban areas like Bade remains underexplored. Challenges such as misinformation, low digital literacy, and cultural barriers may limit the effectiveness of social media in promoting healthy eating habits. Additionally, while social media can act as a bridge to disseminate nutrition information, the extent to which it translates into behavior change in communities with limited health resources is unclear. This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the influence of social media on dietary choices and nutrition awareness in Bade Local Government Area.

Furthermore, the research contributes to the broader discussion on digital health communication and its implications for addressing public health challenges in underserved areas.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the influence of social media on dietary choices and nutrition awareness in Bade Local Government Area, Yobe State. It is limited to evaluating the role of social media platforms and their effectiveness in promoting healthy eating habits within this locality.
